I just spent 4 days in Arizona at the Marriott Buttes attending a Spray Tan Conference geared specifically for airbrush tanners. This was an opportunity to network with fellow industry professionals and learn from masters in the business world.
This conference was so much fun, educational and most of all rewarding! The list of guest speakers was SO incredible and included the Founder of Atta Girl and Celebrity Make Up Artist, Kristina Duff, Renee Preis International, developer of "Women Rockin'It" Series, Paul DiGrigoli, School of Cosmetology, Special appearance by Veronica Torres, Producer of the hit TV program The Doctors, Ron Cates of Constant Contact and of course Kelly Richardson of B.Bronz, our host for this most amazing weekend!

Why Should You Spray Tan?

Many people want to know why they should spray tan in lieu of traditional tanning.
1. No More Sunburn
We all know just how badly a sunburn can hurt and most of us know how much damage it can cause to our skin but with spray tanning you can avoid sunburn completely!

2. No More Base Tan Needed

One of the more aggravating parts of tanning at the beach or on the sunbeds is that if you don’t have a tan already you have to build up that base tan a little at a time to avoid skin damage. That is not the case with spray tanning, you just work with your tanning technician and find a color that works for you and in one session you have your tan!

3. Saving Time and Last Minute Tans

Since regular tanning often means that you have to do multiple sessions to get that deep bronze color you’ve been looking for, it also means that you always have to plan ahead for parties! With spray tanning you can get a complete tan on your lunch break or the morning before your party and still look fabulous!

4. Skin Health

Not only does spray tanning help you to avoid prolonged exposure to UV rays that can damage and age skin but it can also help you to work on any damage that already exists from tanning! Post Spray Tanning Guide to Prolong Your Sunless Tan

Immediately following your spray tan application, avoid sweating. Avoid all activities that may cause you to sweat excessively and possibly cause streaking of the cosmetic bronzers. On a hot day use the air conditioning in your car. Remember, your skin has just been tinted with a water soluble solution. For maximum results, wait at least four hours before showering or bathing. Shower with plain water for the first sixteen hours after your session. Use of bar soaps and cleansers in that first 16 hours will halt the continued development of DHA color. After 16 hours we recommend using a mild pH balancing shower gel.
The day after your session and after your first shower, use a moisturizing lotion that contains a diluted amount of DHA. This lotion is specifically designed to keep your tan healthy and your skin moisturized, while adding a refreshing and renewing glow each day to your sunless color.

How to achieve optimum results

The first step in maintaining your spray tan starts BEFORE you get sprayed. Your skin rebuilds and replaces itself daily and completely every 28 days. Our natural skin exfoliation process means that 25% of our skin is exfoliated every week. DHA, the active ingredient in all sunless tanners only works within the top 25% of our skin, called the stratum corneum. If these dead skin cells are not removed prior to your sunless spray session, they ultimately create a barrier thereby preventing DHA absorption.
Since a sunless spray tan only effects the top 25% of your skin, you will want to remove the dead dry skin cells by gently exfoliating with nylon mesh gloves and an oil free body scrub designed specifically for sunless tanners 24 hours before your session. The use of many over the counter shower products, soaps or moisturizing shower gels have a high pH. Many of these products will neutralize the DHA bronzing reaction and cause any DHA that has not yet reacted to result in a less than desirous color.

Spring has arrived, the weather is getting warmer and more skin is getting exposed to the sunshine. Who doesn't love the sunshine? Unprotected skin even on a cloudy day increases our risks for skin cancer. Remember that a good broad spectrum UVA-UVB sunscreen will offer the necessary protection for your body. For my face, I am always on the look out for a truly water and sweatproof product that is paba free, leaves a matte finish and is affordable. Is there such a thing?
I recently discovered a facial sunscreen product by Neutrogena called Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily SunBlock. This is an ultra sheer liquid offered in a 55 and 70 spf respectively. Risk Factors for Developing Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in the United States, and its rates continue to rise. In fact, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, at the rate at which skin cancer incidence is increasing, one in five Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime.
Because skin cancers are highly curable if detected and treated in the early stages, screening for skin cancer is one of the most important steps that people can take (besides staying out of the sun) to prevent skin cancer altogether or to optimize the chances of a cure.
Some people are at a higher risk of developing skin cancer than others. Risk factors, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, include the following:

A close blood relative who has or has had melanoma, or a family history of other skin cancers
A personal history of skin cancer
A history of exposure to UV rays from the sun, tanning beds or sunlamps, whether intermittent or year-round, even if the exposure was years ago.
A past experience of severe, especially blistering, sunburn
Fair skin, especially when the person has blond or red hair and blue, green or gray eyes
Sun sensitivity or a tendency to burn and freckle rather than tan
Large, asymmetrical, or unusual-looking mole(s)
50 or more moles
A history of X-ray treatments for acne
A current regime of immunosuppressive medications for severe arthritis or to prevent organ rejection

Regular screening visits to the dermatologist are one important way you can take control of your health. The American Academy of Dermatology advises that everyone, at the very least, should "check your birthday suit on your birthday."

Lathering on the sunscreen, trying to stay out of the sun during the midday hours, and wearing clothing and hats to protect against the sun's damaging rays will help prevent skin cancer not to mention premature aging. Because most of us have been out in the sun unprotected and have experienced a more-than-mild sunburn at some time during our lives, screening for skin cancer provides the best chances of catching precancerous areas or early skin cancers.

Again, the good news is that skin cancer is highly curable in its early stages. It is up to each of us to screen for these early stages so that precancerous or cancerous areas may be completely removed to optimize these high chances for a cure.
